India's First Human-Stray Safety Programme

Teaching children to be safe on their streets.

With every creature on it.

India's streets belong to children and stray animals equally. When children understand street animals — their needs, their fears, their nature — everyone wins. Safe Paws teaches compassion alongside safety, creating streets where both thrive.

"A child who reads the gali's dogs — their body, their fear, their need — is a child who understands their street. And a child who understands their street is never truly afraid in it."

GAP
The Gap Nobody Is Filling

This is not about bad animals. It is about missing education.

Children get bitten — needlessly
Every year, over 5.2 lakh children under 15 are recorded bite victims. Most incidents stem from panic, provocation, or simply not knowing what the animal's posture means.
Fear becomes lifelong
A child bitten or frightened before age 8 carries that fear for decades. It shapes how they treat animals, how they respond in emergencies, how they move through shared spaces.
Cruelty comes from helplessness
Children who fear animals they don't understand act out. Not out of malice — out of powerlessness. Education is the only antidote.
Communities stay divided
Residents vs feeders. Children vs street dogs. A simple, shared language of safety could bridge every gap — but nobody has built it yet.

No school subject teaches children what to do when they encounter a stray animal. Not a single chapter. Not a single session. This is the gap Safe Paws fills.

What Safe Paws Is

Not a warning. Not a lecture. A conversation.

Safe Paws is India's first structured educational programme designed to teach children — from Class 1 to Class 10 — how to live safely alongside stray animals. It is not an animal rights programme. It is a human safety programme.

The curriculum is age-graded, activity-based, and built around three core promises: I will not fear without reason. I will not harm without cause. I will protect my street — every life on it.

Safe Paws is delivered in schools, housing societies, community centres, and youth groups — wherever children gather. It requires zero infrastructure from the host and leaves behind a changed child.

The Heart of Safe Paws

Three promises. Carried for a lifetime.

"I will not fear without reason."

Understanding replaces panic. A child who can read an animal's posture and body language is a child who will not freeze, flee blindly, or provoke.

"I will not harm without cause."

Cruelty begins with powerlessness. When a child understands, they no longer feel threatened. And when they don't feel threatened, they don't harm.

"I will protect my street — every life on it."

The third promise is the fullest one. It asks children to see themselves not as bystanders but as stewards — of their community, their street, every creature on it.

The Programme

Three tiers. One journey.

Calm stray dog on the street

The foundation tier introduces young children to the animals they share their streets with. Through storytelling, drawing, and guided observation, children learn to identify body language, understand the difference between a scared animal and an aggressive one, and practise the three Ss: Stop, Stay Calm, Step Back.

"Every animal on my street has a name, a home, and a feeling."

The Safe Paws Pledge

Ten seconds to say. A lifetime to carry.

I will not fear without reason.

I will not harm without cause.

I will protect my street — every life on it.

Every child who takes the Safe Paws Pledge carries it back to their family, their street, their community.

For School Principals & Educators

Your school teaches Maths. Science. Language. Does it teach survival?

Every day, children walk through streets filled with animals they have never been taught to understand. The school gate opens onto that street.

01
It fills a gap no subject covers
Street safety with animals is taught nowhere in the national curriculum. Safe Paws occupies this space without displacing any existing subject.
"A gap filled is a harm prevented."
02
5.2 lakh bite victims were children under 15
This is not a rare event. It happens in every city, every month. Preparedness is the only prevention that works at scale.
"Knowledge is the only vaccine."
03
It builds emotional intelligence
Children who learn to read animal signals develop broader empathy, better emotional regulation, and stronger community instincts.
"Empathy is a learnable skill."
04
Zero prep required — Safety Troop handles everything
Materials, facilitators, scheduling — all provided. The school provides the children. Safety Troop does the rest.
"We show up fully formed."
05
Reaches every child — not just the brave ones
Safe Paws is designed for children who are already afraid. The curriculum begins where they are — with fear — and walks them to understanding.
"This is for the scared child first."
06
Creates a ripple far beyond the classroom
Every child carries the pledge home. Parents change. Neighbours change. Streets change. The classroom is the starting point, not the finish line.
"The ripple reaches the street."
"When a school chooses Safe Paws, it tells its students something no textbook can: that the world outside the gate matters, and you are equipped to navigate it."

The Landscape We Are Entering

India is not starting from zero. But it is far from enough.

Several organisations have pioneered animal-human education in India. Humane World for Animals, Welfare of Stray Dogs, and others have run bite-prevention workshops in select cities. Their work is valuable — and insufficient.

Most existing programmes are one-off sessions, adult-focused, or concentrated in a handful of cities. There is no age-graded, nationally deployable curriculum. There is no structured school integration. There is no programme designed to accompany children from Class 1 to Class 10.

Safe Paws does not compete with these programmes. It completes the picture — providing the systematic, school-integrated layer that nobody else has built.

Every existing programme together reaches under 2% of the gap. Safe Paws is built to reach the other 98%.

A Note to Parents

You cannot always be there.

The school gate opens onto a street. That street has animals on it — stray dogs, cats, cows — that your child will encounter without you beside them.

Safe Paws does not promise your child will never encounter a difficult situation. It promises they will know what to do when they do.

It promises they will not panic. They will not provoke. They will not be helpless. They will carry three sentences for a lifetime — and those sentences will keep them safe.

Ask your school to bring Safe Paws in. It takes one conversation to change every child's relationship with their street.

And that street is where your child lives, plays, and grows up.
